Best Time to Visit Kashmir in 2026: Month-by-Month Guide
There is no single "best" time to visit Kashmir — it depends entirely on what you want to see. Snow lovers, tulip chasers, and autumn-leaf seekers all have completely different ideal months. This month-by-month guide tells you exactly what each season offers, what's open, what it costs, and how to plan your cab and routes around the weather.
Quick Season Overview
| Season | Months | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Snow, skiing in Gulmarg |
| Spring | Mar–Apr | Tulips, blossoms, mild weather |
| Summer | May–Aug | All roads open, lush meadows |
| Autumn | Sep–Nov | Golden chinar, fewer crowds |
Month by Month
January – February: Deep Winter
Srinagar is cold (often below 0°C) and Gulmarg becomes a genuine ski resort with the Gondola running over snow. Dal Lake sometimes partially freezes. Note: the Sonamarg road usually closes due to snow, so adjust your itinerary. Hotels are cheaper and crowds thin. Pack serious winter gear.
March – April: Spring & Tulips
One of our favourite windows. The famous Tulip Garden in Srinagar typically opens late March to mid-April with over a million blooms. Almond and cherry blossoms appear, weather is crisp but pleasant, and crowds are lighter than summer. Roads steadily reopen through April.
May – June: Peak Summer Begins
All roads — including Sonamarg's Zoji La approach — are open. Meadows are at their greenest, days are warm and comfortable. This is peak family-holiday season, so book cabs and hotels well ahead. The Amarnath Yatra usually begins late June/July, increasing demand.
July – August: Monsoon-Light Summer
Kashmir gets far less monsoon than the rest of India, making it a popular summer escape from the plains' heat. Occasional rain, but generally pleasant. Highest tourist volume — prices peak. Book everything early.
September – October: Golden Autumn
Arguably the most photogenic season. The chinar trees turn fiery gold and red, especially in the Mughal Gardens and around Naseem Bagh. Weather is crisp, crowds drop after September, and hotel rates ease. Excellent value and stunning scenery.
November: Late Autumn
Cooling rapidly toward winter. Beautiful, quiet, and cheap, but some higher routes begin closing. Good for travellers who want solitude and don't mind the chill.
How Season Affects Your Cab & Routes
Season directly shapes logistics. In winter, the Sonamarg road closes and Gulmarg may need a vehicle comfortable on snow-packed roads. In peak summer, demand pushes cab availability tight — pre-booking matters. Spring and autumn are the easiest to plan, with open roads and relaxed availability. We always advise guests based on live conditions for their exact dates, because a road that's open in one week of April may have been closed the week before.
Festival & Event Timing
The Tulip Festival (late March–April) and Amarnath Yatra (typically July–August) are the two biggest seasonal events affecting travel. The Yatra in particular increases traffic and security checks on certain routes, so if you're visiting then, build in extra time and travel with a driver who knows the current diversions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Kashmir in 2026?
It depends on what you want: December–February for snow and skiing in Gulmarg, March–April for tulips and blossoms, May–August for lush green meadows and full road access, and September–October for golden autumn chinar trees with fewer crowds.
Which months are best value for a Kashmir trip?
Late March to April (spring/tulips) and late September to October (golden autumn) offer the best balance of good weather, open roads, lighter crowds and lower hotel rates than the June–July peak.
Is the Sonamarg road open in winter?
No. The Sonamarg road typically closes in winter due to snow and usually reopens around May. If you visit in winter, plan your itinerary around Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar instead.
