Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are Kashmir's three headline destinations, and they're genuinely different in character. Gulmarg is the most famous and the easiest to reach. Its star attraction is the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world's highest cable cars (Phase 1 to Kongdoori, Phase 2 toward Apharwat Peak). In winter it's a world-class ski destination; in summer, a vast green meadow ringed by snow peaks. It suits first-timers, families, and anyone wanting maximum payoff for minimum travel time.

Choose Gulmarg if: you want the iconic gondola, skiing in winter, or an easy, high-impact day trip close to Srinagar.

Pahalgam — The Valley of Shepherds

Pahalgam is greener, gentler and more spread-out. The draw is its trio of sub-valleys — Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari — plus the rushing Lidder River. It's also the base for the Amarnath Yatra. The pine-clad scenery has featured in countless films. Note that inside Pahalgam you'll switch to local union vehicles to reach the valleys.

Choose Pahalgam if: you love riverside walks, layered valley scenery, ponies, and a slightly slower, more pastoral feel.

Sonamarg — The Meadow of Gold

Sonamarg is the most dramatic and alpine of the three, gateway to the Thajiwas Glacier and the high Zoji La pass toward Ladakh. The scenery is raw and mountainous. The catch: the road is only open in summer (roughly May–October) and closes in winter. Inside Sonamarg, local taxis and ponies take you to Zero Point and the glacier.

Choose Sonamarg if: you're visiting in summer and want the most rugged, glacier-and-peaks alpine drama.

Cab Costs & Logistics

All three are day trips from Srinagar. In a sedan, each is roughly a single ₹2,000 cab day, plus local union vehicles or ponies inside Pahalgam and Sonamarg (₹1,500–₹3,000 depending on how far you go). Gulmarg has fewer mandatory local-vehicle costs but the gondola is ticketed separately (₹740/₹950). Basing in Srinagar and doing each as a return day trip is the cheapest, simplest approach.

If you have a week, the magic is in the contrast — Gulmarg's open meadows, Pahalgam's river valleys, and Sonamarg's glacier all in one trip.
