Kashmir has always had a spring garden everyone knows about. Now it has an autumn one. Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood — the Garden of Chrysanthemums — reopened on 23 October 2026 at Cheshma Shahi, right beside the Tulip Garden, and it is the single best reason to visit Srinagar between late October and the end of November. Here is everything you need to plan the morning around it.

What Is Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood?

Developed by the J&K Department of Floriculture, Parks and Gardens, Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood is billed as Asia's largest chrysanthemum garden: roughly 100 kanals (about 5 hectares) of terraced beds holding more than one lakh chrysanthemum plants across 70-plus varieties. It first opened in October 2025 and came back bigger for its second season in 2026, with more flower beds, water features, selfie points and better visitor facilities. The launch coincided with the third Autumn Flower Festival, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah opened the gates himself, calling it "a new chapter for autumn tourism in Kashmir".

Why it matters for a traveller: until now the valley's floral calendar peaked in April and faded with the tulips. The chrysanthemum show lands exactly when the chinar trees turn, so you get flowers and fall colour in one trip.

Where It Is and How to Get There

The garden sits inside the Botanical Garden complex at Cheshma Shahi, on the Zabarwan slopes above Dal Lake — a few minutes from the Tulip Garden gate and a short drive up from Boulevard Road. From Lal Chowk it is about 20–25 minutes by cab; from the airport, 40–50 minutes depending on traffic.

🚗 Getting there: There is no reliable public transport up the Cheshma Shahi road, and auto-rickshaws will not wait for you. A Wynn cab for the day starts from ₹2,000 and covers the garden, Pari Mahal, Cheshma Shahi spring and the Mughal gardens in one loop — or do the loop on two wheels with a rented scooter, which is the most enjoyable way to ride Boulevard Road in autumn.

Best Time to Visit

Timings and the entry ticket are set by the Floriculture Department and were not formally published at opening; expect daytime hours and a nominal ticket similar to the Tulip Garden. Confirm at the gate or ask your driver, who will know the current arrangement.

What You Will See

Think of it as a painter's palette laid out in terraces. Blocks of deep pink and magenta alternate with marigold-orange and butter-yellow beds, broken by white and lilac varieties and circular island beds you can walk right up to. Wrought-iron benches sit under chinars and pines at the upper end — the spot everyone photographs — with the Dal Lake basin hazy in the distance. Allow 60–90 minutes; longer if you are photographing.

Photography Tips

Shoot the long beds diagonally so the colour bands lead the eye to the trees. Get low for the dense pink varieties — they photograph best at flower height. The bench under the chinars at the top of the garden is the signature frame; go early to have it empty. On misty mornings expose for the flowers, not the sky.

Sample Half-Day Plan

  1. 8:30 am — pickup from your hotel or houseboat by cab
  2. 9:00 am — Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood (75 minutes)
  3. 10:30 am — Pari Mahal and Cheshma Shahi
  4. 12:00 pm — Nishat Bagh under the chinars, lunch on Boulevard Road
  5. 3:30 pm — Shikara on Dal Lake, back to the hotel by 5:30

The whole loop is well under 30 km, which is why a Srinagar local sightseeing day is the cheapest way to see it all. If you are in Kashmir for longer, our 5, 6 and 7-day itineraries fit the garden into day one or two.

💡 Bottom line: Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood turns November — once Kashmir's quietest tourist month — into one of its most beautiful. Go on a weekday morning, pair it with Pari Mahal and the Mughal gardens, and book your cab or scooter the day before so you are at the gate when it opens.
