Where to Shop in Kashmir
Real saffron, genuine Pashmina, pure honey β and how to avoid the commission traps. A local's honest guide to buying Kashmir's finest, the right way.
Why this guide exists: Kashmir is famous for its crafts β but tourists are often taken to "showrooms" that pay drivers big commissions, then inflate prices to cover it. At Wynn, that's not how we ride. This page tells you what to buy, how to spot fakes, and what fair prices look like. Some sellers below are verified partners (clearly marked); the buying advice is the same whether they pay us or not.
πΊ Saffron (Kesar)
Kashmiri saffron from Pampore is considered the finest in the world β deep red threads, intense aroma, high crocin content. It also has a GI (Geographical Indication) tag. Real Kashmiri saffron is expensive for a reason; if a "deal" seems too cheap, it's almost certainly adulterated or dyed corn-silk.
How to spot real saffron: Genuine threads are trumpet-shaped, deep crimson with a slightly orange tip, and release colour slowly in warm water (not instantly). Real saffron tastes slightly bitter, never sweet. Ask for a GI-tagged pack and a bill.
True Pashmina is hand-spun and hand-woven from the fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat. A genuine Pashmina shawl is feather-light, incredibly warm, and can take weeks to months to make β which is why real ones cost what they do. "Pashmina" sold for a few hundred rupees is almost always blended viscose or machine-made.
How to spot real Pashmina: Look for the GI label and a Pashmina mark / lab certificate. Genuine Pashmina passes warmth and weave tests; the weave is slightly irregular (hand-done). Be wary of "shahtoosh" β it's banned (made from an endangered antelope); never buy it.

Kashmiri walnuts, almonds, and dried apricots are prized for their quality. Kashmiri walnuts in particular have thin shells and rich kernels. Buy whole and crack a few to check freshness β old stock tastes rancid.
Buying tip: Prices are usually per kilo. Whole walnuts keep longer than shelled. Ask to taste before buying in bulk, and compare a couple of shops β rates vary a lot near tourist spots.
Kashmir's high-altitude meadows produce excellent raw honey β acacia, wildflower, and the prized saffron-belt honey. Raw, unprocessed honey crystallises over time (a sign it's real, not a defect).
How to spot pure honey: Raw honey is thick, cloudy, and crystallises in cool weather. Beware honey that stays perfectly clear and runny forever β it may be sugar-syrup blended. Ask whether it's raw/unfiltered and where the apiary is.

Raw acacia & wildflower honey from local apiaries. Glass jars, lab-tested purity.
Hand-knotted Kashmiri silk and wool carpets are among the finest in the world, with knot counts running into the hundreds per square inch. A real hand-knotted carpet can take months or years to make. They're a serious purchase β buy with care and always get documentation.
Buy carefully: Carpets are where the biggest markups and pressure-selling happen. Genuine hand-knotted carpets have slightly irregular knots on the back and a signature/label. Get a proper invoice and authenticity certificate, and never feel pressured to buy on the spot. Compare before committing.
Always ask for a bill. A genuine seller gives one without hesitation.
Be wary of "no commission" claims that come with surprisingly high prices β the commission is just baked in.
Government emporiums (J&K Government Arts Emporium) are a safe baseline for fair prices and authenticity if you're unsure.
Don't shop under time pressure. The "special price, only today" line is a sales tactic, not a deal.
For big buys (carpets, fine Pashmina), get a certificate and keep the invoice for customs/insurance.
