The Srinagar–Leh highway (NH1) is 420 km through Sonamarg, over the Zojila pass, down to Drass and Kargil, and on through Mulbekh and Lamayuru to Leh. It is done over two days with a night at Kargil — this is both the rule for a sensible driver and the better way to see the road. Because the journey is multi-day and the car returns empty, we quote it individually rather than from a table.

The two days

Day 1, Srinagar → Kargil (205 km, 6–7 hrs): early departure, Sonamarg by 9, Zojila (3,528 m) in the morning while it is quiet, Drass (the second-coldest inhabited place on earth, says the sign), Kargil War Memorial, night in Kargil.
Day 2, Kargil → Leh (215 km, 5–6 hrs): Mulbekh's rock-cut Buddha, the Fotu La and Namika La passes, Lamayuru monastery and moonland, the Indus at Nimmu, magnetic hill, Leh by afternoon.

Season and altitude: Zojila opens around late May or June and closes in November; outside that window this route does not run. Leh is at 3,500 m — the two-day drive is a gentler acclimatisation than flying, but plan a rest day in Leh regardless.
