The drive

South-west from Srinagar through Budgam town and Khansahib, then up through villages and pine forest to the meadow at 2,730 m. It is 42 km and about 1.5 hours; the last 10 km are narrow and slow. The road is usually open from May to October and closes with snow.

Why Doodhpathri instead of Gulmarg: no union restrictions on where the cab can go within the meadow area, no gondola queues, and far fewer visitors. The Shaliganga stream, the Tangnar and Palmaidan meadows and the pine edges are all walkable from where the cab parks. It is the better choice for families with small children and anyone who wants quiet.
